9:33 am GMT, day 5.

Day 5 is a good day to die! Ent’er Ark’toth, proud Klingon warrior and tactical officer.

Klingons begin in the Great Hall of Qo’nos. Born at level 6, he has already outlevelled Lieutenant Reh. His starting equipment is a little better than the Federation, but not by much. He also has 3800 skillpoints to spend.

Today is a good day to blog!

The skills available to the Klingons appear to be identical to those available to the Federation. That’s a good thing from a PvP-balance perspective.

3:44 am GMT Day 4.

We’re up to version 20100108b.23, with the patch notes here.

When last we saw Arkturos Reh, he was getting ready to head to the Paulson Nebula in the Lackey System, Orion Sector.

First though, I’ll spend some of these Bridge Officer points I’ve been accumulating. You can spend Bridge Officer points to raise your BO’s skills, in a similar way to how you spend skill points to raise your own skills.

The Bridge Officer skill panel is much like you’re own but with far fewer choices, just one ground and one space skill per rank. You can swap those skills out for different ones back at Spacedock but I’m happy with what T’Rix has available at the moment, and I’m going to put all my Bridge Officer points into improving his Torpedo: High yield 1 skill. Using that skill in combat increases the power of your torpedo salvos for 30 seconds, so it comes in quite handy. I also boosted Luc’s Tachyon Beam power which helps to strip away enemy shields.

Star Trek Online Tutorial 29 Bridge Officer Skills 300x187

Teaching a young dog new T'Rix.

When you have spent enough Bridge Officer points on a single BO you can promote them to get them access to their next tier of skills. You can’t promote someone higher than the rank below your own, of course, so there won’t be any promoting going on until Reh becomes a Lieutenant Commander.

There we go. With improved firepower, NOW we’re ready for the Paulson nebula!

00:01 am GMT, Day 3

Upon logging on after getting cut off by the emergency maintenance last night I find myself back in the Delta Volanis cluster. There is a button on the right that offers me the opportunity to return to the mission I was in, and I accept.

Beaming down, the planet is the same as I remember it, but my number of objectives completed has changed from 2/5 to 0/5. This would be fine, except that my objectives were to defeat groups of Klingons, and there no longer appear to be any Klingons to be found. Never mind, I’ll just abort, and find another planet to explore.

Before I go I have a quick run around to try to find the two anomalies my scanners say are here, but they prove as elusive as the Klingons.

1:32 am GMT, Day 2

So, I speak to my new friend, Lieutenant Grall, and he gives me a mission to explore the Delta Volanis cluster, near Sirius Sector. After a quick trip at warp speed I find myself in a zone full of anomalies.

Star Trek Online Tutorial 19 Delta Volanis Anomaly 300x172

My God! It's full of anomalies!!!

These aren’t the sort of anomalies you harvest. As I understand it, visiting any of these will be a randomly generated mini-adventure. How I can resist? Engage!

7:02 pm GMT, Day 2

There’ve been no further patches or patch notes since the emergency patch of last night.

Our replacement hero, Arkturos Reh is getting ready to leave Stardock in search of new adventures. So he beams back to his ship, and heads, for the first time, to Sector Space! And then gets disconnected before I can take a picture, and I can’t get back in just yet.

Think of this as a commercial break during an episode (though I suspect everyone just watches them on DVD or downloads them these days!).

7:23 pm GMT, Day 2

We’re back in. This is Sector Space:

Star Trek Online Tutorial 11 Sector Space 300x173

Sector Space in Star Trek Online

This particular sector is called the Vulcan Sector, lying in the Sirius Sector Block. From here we can see a variety of star systems, and other points of interest. When you select them, you can choose to warp to their location, but it seems like you can also choose to chug about at impulse speed so I’ll do that for now to get a feel for it. You can also see a wide variety of player and NPC ships going about their business.

Lieutentant Reh’s purpose here is to find a merchant vessel called the SS Azura which has gone missing. Turns out it really isn’t all that missing as I can see it from over here. We’d better go make sure they’re alright.
