Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 30 : Journey to 0,0

I set out on a journey to the 0,0 map co-ordinates. It’s not terribly far, just on the other side of the jungle, but I’ve not been out that way yet and I’m sure to encounter some wonderful things!

Mods Encountered

Utility Mobs 2.0.1 by Father Toast : The Luggage is back! Let’s see how long I can keep him alive this time.

Ars Magica 5.52.013 by Mithion: I encountered this house a few times during my worldgen tests, and I think it is my favourite Ars Magica wizard tower. Though the fact that it is about 50% wool probably makes it a bit of a fire risk. Once I put wooden doors into every entrance on both floors, it’ll be fantastic for my planned village.

As my wizard level rises, I’m running into more of these pesky dark mages. But so far they have just been novices, and not particularly menacing. You can tell by the colour of their spellbook. The darker the colour of the spellbook, the more dangerous they are. The more skilled mages may give me a very bad day if they find me before I’m ready.

Goblins 4.2 by Sartharis : Our first run in with the goblins. In small numbers they’re not too dangerous, but when I find a goblin village the fur will really start flying.

Rancraft Penguins : The penguins I encountered today were Little Blue Penguins, which should have been easy enough to remember. They’re one of the species you can find in beach sub-biomes. Penguins can be tamed as pets using fish, sheered for feathers, or hunted for their pelts.

Chococraft 2.8.7 by Torojima : As I did not have this installed when I created the world, it is only now that I’ve travelled a good distance away that I’ve found some Gysahl Greens. And, being me, I made them rather rare too. Gysahl Greens can be farmed, so I’ve found all I’ll ever need to get the Chocobo onto my team.

Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 29 : Building a Better Bee with Forestry

It’s time for Plan Bee!! With my diamonds in hand, I construct the fabled Beealyzer, allowing me to view the genetic structure of my buzzing friends. Armed with this knowledge, I set forth to build a better bee.

It was probably ridiculously confusing to keep track of the traits during the video so I made a little chart. I think I had a certain amount of beginner’s luck in how many mutations to the Common Bee strain I had. The Common Bee is the first major step for any bee breeder, and you can get them from crossing almost any of the mundane bees. Building a stable Common Bee population is probably my first main task, as they’ll be needed for many steps further down the way.

This episode builds upon my bee hunting antics in episode’s 16, 17, and 18, and I made the clockwork engine, carpenter, and centrifuge in episode 27.

Forestry Bee Breeding Generation 1

Mods Encountered

Forestry 2.2.8.2 by Sir Sengir: I am filled with bee glee! It might not have seemed like it during the video, as I was trying to wrap my head around quite a lot of detail, but this is just the sort of complex system that I love. I’m not exactly sure how to do videos about it and make it interesting, but I’ll do my best!

Extra Bees 1.6 prerelease 15 by Binnie: Provider of my incredibly useful indoor bees, the Rocky bees. The most recent version made Marble bees obsolete, but I still have some left. I’m using those princesses for a bit of practise.

Magic Bees 2.0.2 by MysteriousAges: My box of magical bees is calling to me, but for now I want to try to stick to the Mundane bees. They’re less likely to accidentally call forth an army of the dead if I make a mistake/get things absolutely right.

Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 28 : The Diamond Hunt

It’s time. I have been held up on my investigation of awesome things by my lack of a few pieces of crystalline carbon. So I get tooled up, and head down into the depths in search of a Minecrafter’s best friend.

Not the most illuminating or exciting episode, I’ll admit. Finding diamonds is a lot like eating your cabbage before being allowed pudding. I promise you that the next episode will involve a great deal of pudding, with custard.

Forestry by Sir Sengir : I’ve gotten most of my honey combs centrifuged now, leaving me with a great big pile of wax, but more importantly, a lot of honey drops for fuelling my beealyzer.

Farlanders : The masked Enderman I encountered was a Rebel Farlander. I’ve had problems with these chaps before, off camera, as they’re quite fond of murdering villagers and stealing their homes. I expect them to be quite a nuisance when I found my village.

Ars Magica by Mithion : Since I raised my wizard level, I’m running into a lot more Ars Magica creatures. I don’t think I’ve encountered a dark mage while recording yet, but they’re out there, and quite troublesome!

It was odd how many arcane creepers were raining down from the area on on the left of the ravine. That makes me wonder if there might be something of interest up there.

Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 27 : Breaking into Buildcraft with Forestry

My staircase to the bottom of the world has run into a natural cave system, so I spend a couple of minutes securing the entrance and showing off my new Firebolt Spell.

With that done, I get down to work. I’ve been needing to make a start with Buildcraft for a while, and Forestry provides a short-cut. The Clockwork Engine is limited in its usefulness, but will let me get on with what I need to do. I also make a Carpenter, and a Centrifuge, which allows me to finish up with some delicious honeyed bread.

Buildcraft 3.6.0 maintained by CovertJaguar : It’s nice to have finally made a start with Buildcraft, even though technically everything I made today was from Forestry!

Forestry by Sir Sengir : Even once you have more complicated engines, the clockwork engine will be a useful and easy to set up engine for quick jobs.

While regular and rocky combs only give honey and wax, even some of the other mundane bees will make combs which centrifuge into more interesting things.

Now I just need to find a diamond for the beealyser…

Extra Bees by Binine : Rocky Bees are not particularly productive, but being able to keep them indoors easily makes up for that. Like all basic bees, they can lead to some farm more interesting species.

Ars Magica by Mithion : Firebolt is the second spell I’ve researched. I’m trying to do them one at a time, from time to time, to make sure I have new things to talk about!

Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 26

In need of inner peace after my disastrous obsidian hunting expedition, I decide to build an aquarium.

Renewed, I also build an anvil for using my stock of enchanted books.

A quiet and somewhat uneventful episode, but I was pleased to finally have some enchanted tools. Since recording I’ve continued my grand staircase downwards and have just broken into a cave network. I’ll save looking in there for the next episode.

Anvil enchanting is vanilla Minecraft, of course, but new to me. This is my first proper game since Alpha, and even unmodded Minecraft still has plenty of new things for me to learn.

Mods Encountered

Mo Creatures by Dr Zhark and Bloodshot 42 : I’m not sure how many different sorts of fish there are to collect. I do have some piranha eggs, but I thought that might be tempting fate.

Wild Caves was responsible for the spider webs I collected down in the caves.

Farlanders adds rubies to worldgen for trading with the friendly Farlanders. Not to be confused with the identical looking Ruby planted by Biomes O’ Plenty, who made the deliberate and annoying decision to be incompatible.

Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 25 : The Riddle of Steel

After a joyous beginning where I introduce my newly bred horse while fighting off an army of monsters, it all goes a bit wrong.

I demonstrate how to make steel from Manganese and Iron, and then bravely set off to use my steel pick to carve some obsidian.

Mods Encountered

Metallurgy by Rebel Keithy and Shadowclaimer : Steel is another step up from Damascus Steel, but I am not currently in possession of enough Manganese to dream of putting it into general usage.

Grimoire of Gaia by Silentine : Dullahan!! That’s what those pesky little blue folks were called. I shall have forgotten again by the next time I encounter one.

Enhanced Portals gets its first mention rather sooner than I expected. It would appear that, in addition to improving how portals work, it also has something to say about the properties of obsidian, the main material for portals. If you don’t have Enhanced Portals installed, steel will handle obsidian very nicely indeed. For me, I shall have to accelerate my descent to depths where diamonds can be found.

Ark’s Magical Modded Minecraft Misadventure 24 : Horse-Taming with Mo Creatures

The reasons for my pumpkin and wheat farming become clear, as I go in search of a trusty steed or three to help me get around a little faster.

Mods Encountered

Mo Creatures by Dr Zhark and Bloodshot42 : The horses, donkeys, saddles, sugarlumps and medallions are all Mo Creatures. Through selective breeding, and a little magic, it is possible to attain pegasi, unicorns, and other exotic mounts. I’ll settle for a sturdy and loyal companion for now.

I’ll be making the means to get horses to stay still in the next episode. That should allow me to take Pablo the pack-donkey on adventures *relatively* safely. I just hope he does better than the luggage in that regard.

Rancraft Penguins : Today was the triumphant first appearance of a Rancraft Penguin. That’s one, getting devoured when I go over to the ocean, just as I clumsily cut to the next scene. Most of the penguin species appear in icier biomes than I’ve found yet, but a few appear on beach sub-biomes, which I guess I’m encountering for the first time in that area.
